Top of the Class

Victoria A. Barton is the daughter of Mary and Robert Stocker. Victoria was a mentor through the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program, and a member of National Honor Society, Model United Nations, and Key Club. During all four years of high school she participated in the Junior Volunteer Program at the Maine Medical Center and spent the summer of 2008 in China with the People to People Student Ambassadors Program and at the Brown University Leadership Institute. Honors and/or awards that Victoria received in high school include the AP Scholar Award, Mount Holyoke Book Award for Leadership and Academic Excellence, and was selected by the principal of Scarborough High School as a nominee for Student of the Quarter. Victoria Barton will be attending the University of Vermont in the fall and plans on majoring in political science.

Lauren Blaisdell is the daughter of Larry and Brenda Blaisdell. Lauren was a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and the Saint Maximilian Kolbe Church Youth Ministry. During all four years of high school she was a three sport athlete participating in basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and indoor track. She served as co-captain of the indoor track team her senior year, and in the same year was also the Class A Long Jump State Champion and Most Valuable Player for the girls' indoor track team. Other honors and awards that Lauren has received in high school include the Colby College Book Award in 2008, US Lacrosse High School Academic All-American 2008, SMAA All-Academic Team for Soccer 2008, and First Team All-State for Girls' Indoor Track 2009. Lauren will be attending the University of New England in the fall.

Amy Buttarazzi is the daughter of Dr. Mark and Nancy Buttarazzi. Throughout her high school career Amy has participated in three sports, lettering in tennis, soccer and swimming. She is a SMAA All-Star and State All-Conference player in tennis and is currently captain of the tennis team. In addition, Amy is a member of National Honor Society, has donated many volunteer hours to Key Club and has been a Mercy Hospital summer volunteer. Outside of school she has been involved in dance and spends her summers as a lifeguard. Amy will be attending Springfield College as a recipient of the President's Achiever Scholarship and will be enrolled in their 6-year Physical Therapy Program.

Jeremy Carter is the son of Kimberly and Dana Carter. Jeremy was the President of the Class of 2009 and served as Vice President of the Class for three years before that. Jeremy was also involved in the National Honor Society as President, the Student Council, the ECOS, the school band, and the outdoor track team. As the captain of the Speech and Debate Student Congress team, he won over thirty local tournaments, two individual state titles, four team state titles, and competed at the National Tournament twice placing 26th in the nation his second time competing. During all four years he was actively involved in the school's Key Club serving on the Board of Directors, as Club Secretary, and as Lt. Governor (a district position). He was also one of the first students elected to sit on the Scarborough Board of Education in the Youth Representative seat, where he has served on the Policy Committee the past two years. Honors and awards he has received through high school include the Clarkson University Leadership Book Award, the Daughter's of the American Revolution Good Citizen's Scholarship Award, National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Honor, and New England District of Key Clubs Outstanding Secretary Award. He will attend The George Washington University in the fall where he will major in political science and history.

Whitney Chamberlain is the daughter of John and Terri Chamberlain. Whitney is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and the Scarborough Community Scholarship Foundation. During all four years of high school she participated in cross country and track, serving as co-captain of the cross country team her junior and senior year, and co-captain of the indoor and outdoor track teams her senior year. Honors and/or awards that Whitney has received in high school include the UMO Society of Women Engineers award, All Academic for four years, All State for indoor track her senior year, and the indoor track state champion of the 800m her senior year. Whitney will be attending the University of Maine at Orono in the fall to study Environmental Engineering.

Sam Chick is the son of Lee Chick and Lisa Letourneau. Sam was the Vice President of the senior class and the National Honor Society and was also a member of the Student Council, Interact Club and the Model United Nations Team. During all four years of high school he competed in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track, serving as a captain of the Indoor and Outdoor track teams during his senior year. He was a two-time state champion in the 800 meter run and was the winner of the Harvard Book Award. Sam will be attending Bowdoin College in the fall.

Matt Couillard is the son of Richard and Mary Jane Couillard. Honors/Awards: National Honor Society, Speech and Debate State Champion, Academic Decathlon State Runner-up, United States Academic Decathlon National Tournament Competitor, Speech and Debate National Competitor, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, University of Rochester Information Technology Award. Activities: Swimming, Interact, Speech and Debate, Academic Decathlon, Model UN, Three-year Class President. Future Plans: The Johns Hopkins University to study International Studies and Economics.

Hanna Flewelling , Salutatorian, is the daughter of Sandra Fussell and Andrew Flewelling. Hanna was an active member of the school music program, participating in the school Wind Ensemble, Concert Jazz Ensemble,and Jazz Combo. She served as Band President he was also selected to participate in the All-State Jazz Festival each of the past three years. Hanna will be attending the University of Southern Maine School of Music in the fall.

Brittany Gooch is the daughter of Mark and Michele Hallett. During her years of high school, Brittany participated in Teens Cooking Kitchen, Education For Employment and the Maine Special Olympics. She also attended Portland Arts & Technology High School's Fast Food Program. Brittany will be attending STRIVE University in the fall.

Spencer Heggers is the son of Arn and Sherry Heggers. Spencer was a member of the National Honor Society and received the Clarkson University High School Achievement award his junior year. Spencer will be attending Boston College in the fall on an Army ROTC scholarship.

Emily Houde is the daughter of Linda and Joseph Paquet and Brian and Irene Houde. Emily was a member of the Jazz Band and Model UN team for all four years and a member of Key Club. She played basketball for two years as well. Emily also received the National Hispanic Recognition award for her SAT scores. She will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall.

Chloe Kumpel is the daughter of Mark Kumpel and Helene Van Neste. Chloe was a counselor for the Maine Youth Leadership Program, a member of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, the National Honor Society, Key Club and both SHS Jazz Bands. Chloe will be attending McGill University in the fall.

Tamara Labanowski, daughter of Brian and Jean Labanowski, has participated in the high school chorus and has played the violin in multiple ensembles, most recently performing with the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. She was the recipient of the Williams College book award in 2008. Tamara received the Presidential Distinguished Scholar Award and will be attending the University of Maine at Orono this Fall.

Sophia Rose Lemire is the daughter of Ron and Christine Lemire. Sophia was president of her freshman and sophomore class, at Parker High School in Hawaii. Throughout her high school career she has been a member of the National Honor Society, Civil Rights, North Hawaii Youth Coalition, Amnesty International, Advisory, and Key Club. Sophia has been an avid participant in paddling, volleyball, theater and guitar. While living in Hawaii, she single handedly founded the Human Rights Awareness Film Festival, which still occurs in the community of Waimea, Hawaii today. Outside of the school environment, Sophia has volunteered through numerous foundations such as Kumon Tutoring Program and Maine Medical Center Junior Volunteer Program. Honors and awards that Sophia has received in high school include becoming a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, receiving the Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Junior Book Award for Commitment to Social Justice, and remaining on high honors all four years of high school, ranking 3rd in her class at Scarborough High School. Sophia will be attending Union College as a member of the Scholars program in the fall.

Caterina MacLean, Valedictorian, is the daughter of Jean-Marie Caterina and Geoffrey MacLean. Involved in Academic Decathlon since her sophomore year, she has gone with Scarboroughs team to three national competitions and was Top Individual Scorer in the State her junior and senior years and Highest Scorer from the State at the 2008 and 2009 nationals. At the 2009 nationals in Memphis, she also received a gold medal for the highest A-level score nationwide in the essay portion of the competition. Caterina has been involved in the schools music program, playing clarinet and tenor saxophone. In October 2007 she attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C; she also has received the Dartmouth Book Award and, as a senior, was named a National Merit Scholar. Caterina plans to attend the University of Chicago in the fall, studying a mixture of political science, linguistics, and the classics.

Erin McElwain is the daughter of Stephen and Lorraine McElwain. Erin was the Secretary of the senior class and a member of the National Honor Society and Yearbook Committee. During all four years of high school, she ran cross country and indoor track as well as played lacrosse, serving as a captain for all three teams her senior year. She helped the indoor track team to four Class A State Championships and the cross country team to one Class A State Championship in 2008. Awards that Erin received in high school include the Cornell University Book Award, the Coach's Award for cross country as well as the Senior Award for cross country. Erin had the honors of making the US Lacrosse Academic All-American Team and the SMAA All Academic Teams for Cross Country and Indoor Track. Erin will be attending the University of Vermont in the fall where she plans to study biological science to enable her to eventually go into the medical field.

Jessica Mitchell is the daughter of David and Deborah Mitchell. She is the Public Relations officer in the Key Club and is a member of the National Honors Society. She has participated in the track program for 4 years and was a member of the field hockey team through her junior year. Honors and awards Jessica has received include the Coach's Award in outdoor track and the St. Michael's Book Award. Jessica will attend Penn State in the fall where she will major in biology.

Katrijn Moulin is the daughter of Johan Moulin and Veerle Pottie. Katrijn was a honor and high honor student. During all four years of high school she participated in Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor track. Katrijn will be attending Bryant University in the fall, majoring in accounting.

Bradley Nakanishi is the son of Greg and Susan Nakanishi. He was the Treasurer of the Key Club, a class representative in the Student Council, a member of the National Honor Society, and a pianist in the Jazz Ensemble. During high school, he participated in cross-country and the track programs, serving as captain of the track programs since his sophomore year. Honors and/or awards that Bradley has received in high school include the Maine Principal's Award, Rensselaer Medal, Southern Forecaster's SHS Winter Athlete of 2009, and All State and All Conference Track and Field Honors. Bradley will be attending Tufts University in the fall.

Julie Passarelli is the daughter of Maureen and Joseph Passarelli. During high school Julie was a member of Student Government, National Honor Society, Key Club, Math Team, and the Band Secretary. Julie participated in soccer, softball, and was a four year member of the swim team. Honors/awards that Julie has received in high school include the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, Student-Athlete Summit, Phi Beta Kappa Academic Achievement Award, District Band, All State Band, Swimming Academic All Conference, All State, and All American, Southwestern Maine Swimming Scholarship, and the Catholic Youth Leadership Scholarship. Julie is a member of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. Julie is a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe church where she is an active member of Youth Ministry. Julie will be attending Fairfield University where she will major in Biology.

Ethan Rundell is the son of Helen and Jonathan Rundell. He is a black belt and participated in karate classes through all four years of high school and became an instructor during his senior year. He participated in Model UN and Interact Club. He received a National Merit Scholarship Letter of Commendation in his junior year, as well as a St. Lawrence Book Award. He volunteered for the Maine Audubon Society for his last three years of high school. Ethan will be attending Vassar College.

Joseph Servadio is the son of Lee and Audrey Servadio. Joseph was a member of the National Honor Society as well as the News section editor of the school newspaper. He has also been active in the band program playing tenor saxophone, participating in the jazz band and jazz combo. He was accepted into the District Honors band for all four years, first chair for the last three. This year, he was accepted into the All-State jazz band as well as the All-State concert band, where he received the second highest audition score in the state. He also was accepted into the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble as first chair this year. Honors and awards Joseph has received include a nomination for the Outward Bound scholarship as well as the St. Michael's College Book Award. Joseph will be attending the University of Delaware in the fall to study mathematics.

Meghan Summerson is the daughter of David and Sandra Summerson. During her four years in high school, Meghan participated in field hockey, cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track, serving as a captain of the outdoor track team her senior year. She was also a member of the Key Club and Interact Club. Meghan received the 2006 Indoor Track Coaches' Award and the 2007 Cross Country Most Improved Runner. She was also named to the SMAA All-Academic Team for cross country and track her senior year. Meghan will be attending College of the Holy Cross as a Biology and Pre-Medical major in the fall.

Peter Tuma is the son of Jane and Michal Tuma. Peter played on the football, basketball, and lacrosse teams all four years of high school, and was a captain of the varsity football team his senior year and received the Coach's Award as well as Academic All-SMAA honors. He is also a member of the Key Club and the Ping Pong Club. His junior year, Peter received the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award from the University of Rochester. Peter will be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts in the fall to study engineering.

Jenna Van Dam is the daughter of Jane and Brian Van Dam. She was secretary of the National Honor Society and a member of Key Club. Jenna participated in soccer, indoor track and outdoor track all four years of high school, serving as co-captain of the outdoor track team her senior year. She was the recipient of the girls' outdoor track Sophomore Award and named to the SMAA All Conference girls' indoor and outdoor track teams as well as the SMAA All Academic girls' soccer team. In her junior year, Jenna received the Smith College Book Award in recognition of her leadership and academic achievements. She will be attending Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts in the fall to study marketing.

Kelsey Webber is the daughter of Lynne and David Webber. During all four years, Kelsey was on the Scarborough High School volleyball team and is also a member of the Key Club where she has volunteered in many community events. In addition, Kelsey volunteers at Maine Medical Center tutoring math in the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital. Honors and awards that Kelsey has received in high school include high honors and honor roll for all four years, receiving the Saint Joseph's College Book Award for academic excellence, and the All Star All Academic certificate for maintaining high grades while participating on a varsity sport. Kelsey will be attending Saint Joseph's College in the fall where she will be a nursing major
