Graduation Exercises

Graduation exercises for Catherine McAuley High School were held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 24 at Merrill Auditorium. Most Reverend Richard J. Malone, ThD, Bishop of Portland, conferred diplomas, assisted by Sister Edward Mary Kelleher, RSM, Principal, and MaryAnn Pour Previti, PhD, President.

Mistress of Ceremonies was Class President, Catherine J. Tracy. Macauley R.D. Kenney, Salutatorian, made introductory remarks. Amy J. Beecher Knowles, a 1984 graduate and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions at New York University's College of Nursing, served as the guest speaker. The graduates performed several musical selections, including "America the Beautiful" by Bates and Ward, "One Moment in Time" by Hammond and Bettis, and the "McAuley School Song" by Peter Donatelli. Laura J. Duran, Valedictorian, made concluding remarks.

Top of the Class

Valedictorian Laura J. Duran is the daughter of Barrett and Joanne Duran of Falmouth. During her four years at McAuley, Duran participated in Cross Country, Swimming, Outdoor Track, Key Club, and Girl Scouts, and was a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, and Yearbook Staff (Editor). She was the recipient of the Maine Pulp & Paper Foundation Scholarship, the Maine Principal's Award, the Girl Scout Gold Award, the University of Rochester Frederick Douglass & Susan B. Anthony Award, the Society of Women Engineers Outstanding Contribution Award, and was part of the SMAA All-Academic Cross Country Team. Duran will continue her education at the University of Maine Orono, where she will major in Chemical Engineering.

Salutatorian Macauley R.D. Kenney is the daughter of William Kenney and Deirdre Dupree of North Yarmouth. While at McAuley, Kenney was a member of the School's Math Team and Mock Trail Team, was Co-President of the Drama Club, and Co-Captain of both the Cross Country and Outdoor Track Teams. Her accomplishments include membership in the National Honor Society and French Honor Society, and honors as a National Merit Scholar and Williams College Book Award recipient. Kenney will study Biomedical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall.

Allison A. Walker-Elders is the daughter of Jeff and Dawn Walker-Elders of Lisbon Falls. During her time at McAuley, Walker-Elders was a member of the School's Drama Club, Book Club, Science Club, Math Team, and Mock Trial Team. She also participated in Girl Scouts, guitar, and ballet, where she held a company internship. In addition to being a National Merit Finalist, Walker-Elders received the Girl Scout Gold Award and Dartmouth Book Award. She will study Neuroscience at Wellesley College in the fall.

Katherine E. Fecteau is the daughter of James Fecteau and Eileen Doyle of Portland. While at McAuley, Fecteau was a member of Cross Country, the Indoor and Outdoor Track Teams, Swimming, Jazz Choir, the Woman's Literary Union, and volunteered her time at ÔRiding to the Top'. In addition to serving as the Key Club President for two years, Fecteau was a member of the National Honor Society, and French Honor Society. She was the recipient of the College of the Holy Cross Book Award, the Rotary Youth Service Award, and the President's Volunteer Service Award. Fecteau will attend Colby College in the fall, where she will study Anthropology.

Olivia C. MacKenzie is the daughter of Duncan and Carol MacKenzie of Buxton. During her four years at McAuley, MacKenzie was active with the Indoor and Outdoor Track Teams, and the Cross Country Team, for which she received the SMAA Fall Athlete of the Year Award and All-State Cross Country honors. In addition, MacKenzie was a member of Key Club, the National Honor Society, a Mercy Hospital Junior Volunteer, and recipient of the St. Anselm College Book Award. MacKenzie plans to study Biochemistry at Bowdoin College in the fall.

Meghan H. Smith is the daughter of Gregory and Barbara Smith of Cape Elizabeth. At McAuley, Smith was a member of the School's National Honor Society, Key Club, Science Club, Book Club, Math Team, Band, and Ethical Leadership Institute. She represented the School through Dirigo Girls State, was the recipient of the Saint Joseph's College of Maine Book Award, and placed second in the VFW's ÔVoice of Democracy' Essay Contest. Smith will continue her education in the fall, studying Political Science at Boston College.

Katelyn J. Desrosiers is the daughter of Marcel and Ellen Desrosiers of Gorham. During her four year at McAuley, Desrosiers studied piano, was a member of the National Honor Society, Varsity Club, and both the School and SMAA Swim Teams. She was the recipient of the Smith College Book Award, and was a National Youth Leadership Conference nominee. In the fall, Desrosiers will attend the College of the Holy Cross, where she will study Pre-med and swim at the Division I level.

Julia R. Furtado is the daughter of Edmund and Sherry Furtado of Dayton. As a McAuley student, Furtado was an elected Class and Student Council Officer, Captain of the Varsity Soccer Team, and member of the National Honor Society. She was part of Maine's All-State Chorus group, a Rotary Youth Leadership Award recipient, and honored with SMAA's Student Athlete Award. Additionally, she was active in the Odyssey Soccer Club and with her Church Choir. Furtado will attend the University of New England in Biddeford, where she will study Applied Exercise Science.

Cassandra M. Donatelli is the daughter of Peter and Cynthia Donatelli of Portland. While at McAuley, Donatelli was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in the School's Drama Club, receiving multiple awards for her work as a member of the Stage Crew. She was also active in the Science Club, and was the recipient of the Bausch and Lomb Science Award and Scholarship from the University of Rochester, where Donatelli will double major in Biology/Biogenetics and Theatre in the fall.

Kristen E. Desrosiers is the daughter of Marcel and Ellen Desrosiers of Gorham. As a McAuley student, Desrosiers studied piano, and was a member of the School's ÔWe the People' Team, the National Honor Society, the Varsity Club, and both the School and All-State Swim Teams. She was the recipient of St. Lawrence University's Book Award, and was a National Youth Leadership Conference nominee. Desrosiers will study Pre-med at the College of the Holy Cross in the fall, and plans to swim at the Division I level.
